Kayaker raises paddle triumphantly against a vibrant red and purple sunset over calm water, creating a serene and triumphant mood.

Waves lap gently against the shore, parrots chatter from swaying palms, and the scent of coconut and fresh lobster wafts through the air. August in Belize is bursting with life... and there’s no better place to experience it all than Placencia.

Why August is Belize’s Secret Season

Belize’s “green season” runs from June through November, and August is right in the sweet spot: lower prices, fewer crowds, and lush, vibrant landscapes. Sure, there might be a few tropical showers, but most pass quickly, leaving behind cool breezes and even greener jungles.

It’s also when some of the country’s best outdoor adventures really shine… especially in Placencia, where one day you can hike through a rainforest and the next, dive into the vibrant world of the Belize Barrier Reef. In between, you’ll find yourself waterfall rappelling, zip-lining through the jungle canopy, ATV’ing along rugged trails, exploring ancient caves, tubing down jungle rivers, discovering Maya ruins, snorkeling vibrant coral gardens, scuba diving alongside eagle rays, island hopping to remote cayes, cruising at sunset, kayaking quiet lagoons, paddleboarding over glassy waters… and still finding time to relax in a hammock with a cold drink in hand.

Can’t-Miss Outdoor Adventures

1. Snorkeling Silk Caye & Turtle Alley

A quick boat ride from Placencia takes you to Silk Caye... a palm-fringed sandbar surrounded by coral reefs and home to sea turtles, rays, and vibrant tropical fish. Turtle Alley, just nearby, is a cleaning station for loggerhead and hawksbill turtles. Bring your GoPro.

Welcome to the world’s first jaguar preserve. Wander jungle trails, swim beneath waterfalls, and birdwatch in a place that feels untouched. Early August mornings are cool and perfect for a shaded hike.

If you’re looking for a thrill, this is it. Bocawina National Park offers the longest zipline in Central America and rappelling down the face of a 100-foot waterfall. Jungle meets adrenaline.

One of the quirkiest fundraisers on the peninsula: bring your float, hop in the sea, and paddle from bar to bar in support of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department. Live music, raffle prizes, and cold drinks make this a highlight of the season.

Support Placencia Lagoon conservation while kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding your way through a scenic race course. This event raises awareness for marine life and ends with celebration on the shore.

August is a fantastic time to visit lesser-known sites like Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit in the Toledo District. These southern ruins are just a few hours from Placencia and rarely crowded.

7. Chocolate & Culture in Southern Belize

Visit a cacao farm in Toledo, learn how chocolate is made from bean to bar, and meet the families who keep these ancient Maya traditions alive.

Sargassum? No Problem...

Some months bring sargassum to Belize’s beaches, and while it doesn’t happen every August, we always plan ahead. Flowers Vacation Rentals properties offer easy access to inland tours, refreshing pools, and even free kayaks or paddleboards. Want to hit the water? We’ll point you toward off-shore cayes and clear lagoons untouched by seaweed.

Culture & Celebration

Toledo District is a popular destination from Placencia, where visitors can immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Maya and East Indian communities. Whether you’re heading south for a day trip or planning a full cultural escape, these celebrations offer authentic, unforgettable experiences.

📅Emancipation Day (August 1): Honor the resilience of Belizeans with a day of cultural reflection. Ceremonies at the Government House include wreath-laying and libation rituals honoring the ancestors. A social media challenge also invites Belizeans to share tributes using #AfrikanEmancipationDayBelize. In Placencia, check with local restaurants, bars, or hotels for any low-key specials or themed gatherings..
